D&D Gifts for a New Player or Teenager (2026): Dice Bags, Trays and What Else to Buy

D&D Gifts for a New Player or Teenager (2026): Dice Bags, Trays and What Else to Buy

Short answer: if the person just started playing, they most likely have a starter set or a rulebook and one set of dice that came with it. What they don't have is somewhere to keep those dice and something to roll them in. A soft dice bag ($32โ€“46) or a folding dice tray ($21.70) fills that gap, is used every session, and does not require you to know anything about the game.

By Mariia, maker at GameFancy. Published October 2026. I sew dice bags and trays, so this guide sticks to what a new player uses at the table. Review numbers come from our own customer reviews.

What a new player already has, and what they don't

Most people start D&D in one of three ways: a friend's table, a school or library club, or an online game. In all three, the rules come from the group or from a book, and dice are the first thing a player buys or borrows. Boxed starter sets usually include dice too.

What is missing is everything around the dice. New players carry them in a pencil case, a sock or a zip-lock bag. One of our customers wrote that their brother "used to bring his dice in a plastic baggie" before getting one as a gift. A parent bought one because "his current dice bag is way too small". This is the gap a gift can fill: the player will buy more dice on their own within months, and the storage problem grows with them.

Three gifts that work for a beginner

Gift What it does Price Why it suits a beginner
Plush creature dice bag (goblin, whale, mothman) Soft bag shaped like a creature, holds 100โ€“120+ dice $39โ€“46 Fun to carry to school or a club, survives being thrown in a backpack
Folding dice tray Fabric tray with a hard removable base, 5.5 ร— 5.5 in, snaps flat $21.70 Keeps dice on the table instead of on the floor; weighs about 90 g
Dice bag with 6 pockets Stands open on the table, about 300 dice, 6โ€“7 full sets in each pocket $41 Room to grow; sets stay separate as the collection gets bigger

If you are buying for a teenager, the plush bag is the safe first pick. It is obviously a gift, it looks good in photos, and it holds far more than one set, so it does not become too small after the first birthday money is spent on dice. For an adult who just started, the 6-pocket bag is the better long-term choice.

A tray is the cheapest option and the easiest to add to someone else's gift. If a grandparent is buying the starter set, a tray at $21.70 sits next to it without competing.

How to pick without knowing the game

You do not need to know their class or their character. Three questions are enough:

  1. Do they like cute things or dark things? Cute: goblin, whale or mushroom prints. Dark: mothman, raven or a black cat.
  2. Do they carry their dice somewhere? If they travel to a club or school, pick a plush bag or a tray that folds flat. If they play at home, a bag with pockets.
  3. Do they already own more than one set of dice? If yes, go for pockets. If no, any bag with room for 100+ dice will be enough for years.

In our reviews, people who bought for a son, daughter, brother, sister or another young relative mostly mention the same things: it arrived quickly, it was well made, and the recipient used it straight away. Of 891 reviews we tagged by recipient, 45 were gifts for a child or a sibling. The comments are short and practical: "My kid loved it!", "perfect amount of nerdy with usability", "SO CUTE! My teen will love it."

Fabric, leather, wood or velvet?

Search results for beginner gifts are full of leather folding trays, wooden trays, magnetic trays and leather or chainmail dice bags. They are good products, but for a first gift they have two drawbacks: they cost more, and most of them are plain black or brown, so they say little about the person.

A fabric tray is lighter (about 90 g here), quieter, and comes in prints. A fabric bag with a hard square bottom stands open on the table, which beginners like because they can see their dice. Velvet bags are softer and smaller; ours hold 120+ dice, and the pocket versions have 6 pockets. If you want to compare makers side by side, our dice tray brands comparison and dice bag brands comparison list what each one publishes about size, weight and materials.

Should I buy the starter set or the rulebook instead?

If the person does not own anything yet and plays with friends who do not have the books either, a boxed starter set is the usual first purchase: it has an adventure, pregenerated characters and dice. If they already play in a group, the group usually has the rules covered, and the Player's Handbook is the book each player eventually wants for themselves. Ask before buying either one. A dice bag or tray is the safe add-on in both cases, because neither the box nor the book comes with somewhere to keep dice.

What not to buy a new player

  • A big wooden dice box. Beautiful, but heavy and expensive for someone who may switch to online play.
  • Many dice sets at once. Choosing dice is half the fun for new players. A bag with room to grow is a better gift than ten sets they did not pick.
  • Rulebooks they already have. If they play at a school club, ask the club organiser which edition the group uses before buying a book.

FAQ

My son just started D&D at school. What's a good first gift?

A dice bag he can carry in his backpack. A plush bag holds 120+ dice and survives a school bag; a folding tray weighs about 90 g and folds flat.

What's a good D&D gift for a teenager under $50?

A plush creature dice bag ($39โ€“46), a folding dice tray ($21.70), or both together for about $60โ€“68.

Does a new player need a dice tray?

It helps more than people expect. Dice roll off tables, and a tray keeps them in one place and makes rolling quieter.

Will a dice bag fit the dice from a starter set?

Yes. A starter set usually comes with one set of seven dice; the smallest bag here holds 100+ dice.

I don't play D&D. Will they actually use it?

Every player rolls dice every session, and most beginners have nowhere to keep them yet. A bag or tray gets used from the next game on.
