Short answer: a dice bag with pockets keeps several dice sets apart inside one bag, so you can find the right set without emptying everything on the table. Pockets organise the space, they do not shrink it: the no-pocket version holds the same amount in one open chamber.

6 pockets, 7 pockets or 10 compartments?
Listings use these numbers differently, so check what is being counted.
- "7 pockets" or "7 compartments" often means 6 pockets around the edge plus the center. That is the same layout as ours.
- 8 to 10 pockets sound better, but each pocket gets smaller. In most bags like that, a pocket fits one set.
- We stop at 6 pockets on purpose. Every pocket adds layers of fabric at the seams; past six, the seams get too thick to sew cleanly. That is why bags with many deep pockets are rare. Longer explanation: why dice bags stop at 7 sections.
The useful question is not "how many pockets" but "how many sets fit in one pocket".

If you play one character, the no-pocket bag is enough and leaves room to grow. If you DM or own many sets, the 6-pocket version saves digging every session.
What to check before you buy any dice bag with pockets
- Capacity in dice, not "large". A number like 300 dice tells you more than a size word.
- Sets per pocket. One set per pocket fills up fast.
- A bottom that stands. A square, stiff bottom keeps the bag open on the table, so you can see into the pockets.
- Lining. Soft lining protects resin and metal dice. Ours is 100% cotton.
- Closure. A drawstring with a clip opens fast and stays shut in a backpack.
