How Many Dice Do D&D Players Own? What 2,300 Reviews and 22 Collectors Told Us (2026)
Share
Short answer: the median D&D player who told us a number carries 9 to 10 dice sets, roughly 65 to 70 dice. Collectors own far more, sometimes thousands, but bring only two or three sets to the table. And when a dice accessory is bought as a gift, it is almost never for the Dungeon Master: in 227 gift reviews, the DM was the recipient 5 times.
We make dice bags, so we see these numbers from an unusual angle: thousands of people telling us, unprompted, how many dice they own and who they bought for. This page collects everything we have counted so far in one place. You are welcome to cite any figure here with a link to this page.

1. How many dice does a D&D player actually carry?
We pulled every GameFancy review that names an actual quantity. Forty-four do. Twenty-four count in sets (median 9.5 sets, range 3 to 50) and nineteen count in individual dice (median 50 dice, range 2 to 300). A standard polyhedral set is 7 dice, so the median player carries roughly 65 to 70 dice.
The more useful number is the empty space. 19 of the 44 reviews (43%) say there is still room left in a bag rated for 300+ dice. Only 2 say it is tight. Reviewers at 11, 12 and 18 sets all describe their bag as around half full. Most players, in other words, own far less than the “huge dice bag” market assumes.
Method: 44 verified reviews that state a numeric quantity, collected across the full GameFancy review history to August 2026. Nobody was surveyed; these are numbers customers volunteered. Reviews saying “lots” or “all of them” were excluded.
2. Collectors own thousands and carry two sets
In a September 2026 thread on r/dice, 22 collectors described their hoards and what they actually bring to a session. Collections ran from 129 dice to roughly 4,000. The table load barely moved:
| Collection reported | Brought to the table |
|---|---|
| 129 dice | 23 dice (sets plus fireball d6s) |
| ~200 dice | 2 d6s |
| ~3,500 dice | 2–3 sets plus a box of d6s |
| ~4,000 dice | a 1–2 set pouch |
| 250–300 sets | 2–3 sets matched to the character |
Two habits repeated across almost every answer: special dice (metal, gemstone, titanium) stay home in rigid storage, and the travel kit is chosen by character rather than by size. The only people who carry big are Dungeon Masters bringing loaner dice.

3. Who dice gifts are really for
We took every review where the buyer said the item was a gift, 227 of them, and counted the recipient:
| Recipient | Share of gift reviews |
|---|---|
| Friend | 27% |
| Partner (boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife) | 18% |
| Sibling or parent | 8% |
| Their child | 6% |
| The Dungeon Master | 2% |
| Not stated | the rest |
Most gift guides are written for “the DM in your life”. In our data, the DM is 5 people out of 227. Many gift buyers also say they do not play at all, and they pick by what the person loves outside the game: a cat, an opossum, Mothman, a colour. This is one shop and mostly dice bags, so DMs are probably undercounted, but the gap is too large to be noise.
4. What buyers say after a year of use
Across 2,300+ verified reviews, the single most common word is “cute” (238 reviews), followed by “beautiful” (215) and “well made” (184). Grouped by what they describe, build-quality phrases (well made, sturdy, great quality, craftsmanship) appear 502 times, appearance words 491 times, capacity phrases 101 times. People buy dice storage for how it looks and, in roughly equal numbers, come back to say it held up.
The complaints are just as telling. The most common is international shipping time (19 mentions), then the drawstring or clip (13) and bag proportions (8). Seam failure, lining wear and fading prints do not appear at all.
What this means if you are buying
- For yourself: size for your next year, not for the market’s “300+” headline. Most players fit in 150 dice; pockets matter more than volume once you pass about 5 sets.
- As a gift: pick by what the person loves outside the game. That is what most gift buyers in our data did, and it is why themed designs outsell plain colours.
- For a collector: they do not need a bigger bag for the hoard. A small, good-looking travel kit for 2–3 sets gets used every week.

Frequently asked questions
How many dice does the average D&D player own?
Among 44 GameFancy customers who named a number, the median is 9 to 10 sets, about 65 to 70 dice, with a range of 3 to 50 sets. Collectors in dice communities report far more, from a few hundred to several thousand dice.
How many dice sets should a new player have?
One or two sets are enough to play. Most regular players settle around 5 to 10 sets within a year, one per character plus a few favourites.
Who buys dice accessories as gifts?
Friends and partners, mostly. In 227 gift reviews, 27% of gifts were for a friend and 18% for a partner. Only 2% were for the Dungeon Master.
Is this data independent?
No. It comes from one handmade shop’s reviews plus a public Reddit thread, so treat it as a large, honest sample rather than a survey of all players. Every method is described next to the number.
