Who is Jimothy — and why is a raccoon a cryptid now?
Jimothy is a real, wild raccoon living in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood. He was born around 2025 with a spinal condition resembling short spine syndrome, which gives him a short, rounded, distinctly “cryptid-looking” silhouette. He is healthy — experts say he moves and forages without pain — he just looks like a creature from a grainy 1970s sighting photo.
In July 2026 a video by Seattle resident Kiana Hall went viral (she named him: “he just looked like a Jimothy to me”), and the internet did the rest. Within weeks Jimothy had:
- a Google Search easter egg (spotted by July 22, 2026),
- an honorary degree from the University of Washington,
- an official recognition from the Seattle City Council,
- a “Jimothy Night” at the Seattle Mariners (August 5, 2026, with proceeds going to local food banks),
- cameos and tributes in Guild Wars 2 and from other game studios,
- and — the part that matters at our table — an official D&D stat block on D&D Beyond.
Wizards of the Coast made Jimothy an official cryptid of the game: an Unaligned Tiny Beast whose real-world shape became a mechanic — the Compact Frame trait lets him move through 4-inch spaces — with actions like Nibble, Hurl Garbage and Captivate, and a Skitter bonus action. A meme raccoon walked into the Monster Manual's neighborhood, and the door was open.
(If you've seen an older, similarly round raccoon rolling across a lawn in 2025 videos — that's “Danny DeVito”, a different short-spined raccoon. Connoisseurs do not confuse the two.)
Why do tabletop players love cryptids?
D&D tables run on monsters with personality, and cryptids are folk monsters — local, half-believed, affectionately absurd. Mothman has been the community favourite for years; in our own shop, Mothman designs are consistent bestsellers and the only trays we pre-stock in our US warehouse. Is there official Jimothy merchandise?
The stat block on D&D Beyond is official Wizards of the Coast content. Our Jimothy bags are not — they're a handmade fan tribute, sewn one at a time, with no affiliation to Wizards of the Coast, D&D Beyond, or (as far as we know) Jimothy himself. We like to think he'd approve of anything that stores snacks.
